personality traits , TROUBLED - Oli thinks that he is unlovable. Oli thinks that he is invisible. Oli thinks that he is worthless. Oli thinks a lot of thinks. Ever since his father got sick he has felt like the odd one out, not getting much love or attention from anyone in his family. Because of this, Oli is under the impression that he isn't wanted. Oli has struggled with depression and anxiety on and off for the past few years.
CLEVER - Oli is a smart kid, although people might not know it looking at his grades. He seems average enough in class, but it's because he isn't applying himself. He used to want to go to college, but he doesn't care much anymore. He figures maybe he'll take some classes at the community college in a couple of years, but for now he knows they don't have the money to send him to school, anyway. For a while Oli failed some classes to see if it would get his parents attention, but it didn't work as well as he thought it would. If Oli applied himself a little more or gave school a bit more thought, it would be obvious he's one of the brighter kids in the class. However, he doesn't have any will to do so.
UNTRUSTING - Ever since his family seemed to turn their back on him, Oli hasn't been able to be very trusting of anyone around him. He doesn't like the idea of a committed relationship. He doesn't like the idea of letting anyone get to know the real him because he's afraid they'll reject him like his family did. Oli tries to keep by himself, and he doesn't advertise the kind of person he is beneath all of his drinking and smoking to anyone. He doesn't like the idea of being that open with someone, no matter who they are.
COMPUTER WHIZ - Oli has been known to be a bit on the geeky side. Oli likes piecing together video chips and making them into movies. Video editing is something he does to pass the time. He is also good at doing layouts and things like that. He enjoys messing with computers. He isn't amazing or anything, but he can figure out and solve most of your basic computer problems. Sometimes his skill with computers is the only thing he feels keep him close to his family. If you have a computer problem, Oli is the person to ask.
ATTENTION WHORE - Oliver looks for attention wherever he can get it. Since it seems like most, if not all, of the time he's lacking attention at home, he looks for it elsewhere. It might be in the classroom when he makes sarcastic comments under his breath of passes notes in the classroom to get people to snicker. It might be at a party where he gets completely wasted and then plays truth or dare with a bunch of people. It might be on the street where someone looked at him the wrong way and Oli feels the need to have a little fight over it, whether it's just yelling or it progresses to a physical altercation. Whatever way he can get it, Oliver is always looking for his next fix when it comes to attention.
FIGHTER - Oliver isn't a fighter in the 'I fight for what I want' kind of way. Unless you mean physically fight. Oli has been known to get into quite a few altercations here and there. There are a few reasons for this. One of the reasons Oli fights is so that he can feel like he actually has some power over what's happening int he world, even if it's not a good thing. He likes the idea of other people feeling the pain he feels, because he feels like he doesn't deserve the shit he has to go through. Another reason is that Oli likes the attention he gets from it. Good attention or bad attention, Oli is what one might call an attention whore. If he can't get it at home, he has to go somewhere else. He's found that fighting is a good way of getting noticed.
INDEPENDENT - Oliver has learned how to survive on his own for the most part. He knows how to cook and clean and felt for himself in the cold, cruel world. He knows how to make his way around town and, if he's desperate, some quick ways to make a few bucks. All and all, being independent isn't something Oliver ever wanted for himself, but he didn't have a choice in the matter. As the middle child, Oli didn't get much attention in the home in the first place. He learned how to take care of himself when the others in the family still whined and complained about simple things, Oli was taking on the big, bad world.
LONER - Oli thinks that he is supposed to be on his own. He thinks that by some fate he was meant to be on his own. As a result, he makes sure to rely on others as little as possible. He doesn't have many friends, and the ones he does have are pretty shallow and easy to get rid of. Oli hasn't been willing to let anyone get to know him since he's moved to Miami. He doesn't want to learn to let people in, but he gets the feeling that one day he might have to.
AFFECTIONATE - Even farther underneath all of his hating life comes his constant craving for affection. While he is still afraid to let people in, he wishes that he could find someone to share everything with. He wants to be in love and have someone to hold onto. He doesn't want to feel like he is always alone. He wants have someone to hold and love, but he doesn't think he will ever find that person. It is still what he wants more than anything.

in depth history , Manny and Julia met the way most couples did. In college. They had a couple of classes together, and while Julia admired him from afar, Manny seemed like the king of campus. He seemed untouchable. He always had girls on his arm, hanging all over him. He had ruggedly good looks, his tan skin and dark hair from his Spanish mother and bright green eyes from his All-American father. Julia felt she paled in comparison to the other girls that seemed to hang around him. She was a little on the tall side, standing at 5'9". Her muddy brown curls used to fall in ringlets around her face, but now were just fuzzy waves. She had plain brown eyes and fair skin with freckles dusted across it. Compared to the blonde eyed models and exotic beauties that usually hung out with Manny, Julia never thought she would have a chance. Then one day, all of that changed. It started out simply as a group project. Julia and Manny had both been absent from the class that day, so they ended up getting paired together. Julia quickly realized when she was hanging out with Manny that he was all she had dreamed he would be. He was kind and funny, but still smart and sensitive. Julia felt her crush growing quickly. Even after the project, the two began spending more time together and quickly became inseparable. Julia was completely in love with him from the moment she had laid eyes on him, but she felt he didn't feel the same way, even after they had graduated from college and decided to move in together. She watched him date other girls, but she knew that they belonged together. Still, she didn't have the heart to do anything about it. She tried getting over him and dating other guys, but nothing worked. She had fallen for the boy.
They lived together for almost a year, keeping it on a friendly basis, but Julia was having a harder and harder time living with that. One day, she found Manny sitting alone at the kitchen table, looking out the window. He looked upset, like he had been crying. Julia had only seen Manny cry once, and she did not want to see it again if she could help it. Manny had broken up with his girlfriend of almost eight months. Out of nowhere, Julia leaned down and kissed him. From that moment on they were a couple. Manny had not realized until that moment that he was crazy about Julia and had been for a while. Only two months later they were engaged, and about six months after that they were married. They were happy. The two were best friends, and remembered that even in their marriage. Manny had a job with the newspaper and Julia was a travel agent. They made decent money and were able to support themselves. Manny was quickly making his way up the career ladder and was making a name for himself. There was only so much Julia could do with her job, but she did it and she did it well. They lived in happy, married bliss for only about a year before Julia got pregnant with their first child. Nine months later she gave birth to a son who the couple named Walter, although no one ever called him that. From pretty much the time he was born, Wallie was a kid that demanded a lot of attention. No one could say no to him. He needed constant love and support. He liked being the center of attention. That was just how he was. He cried and wailed when his mom and dad weren't focusing on him, and he was happy as a clam when they were. When Julia got pregnant again when Wallie was one and a half, he was not happy. Wallie was used to everyone giving him attention when they came over, but now for some reason they kept on paying attention to Julia's stomach instead. When Julia gave birth to Oliver, Wallie was not excited about having a new brother. He didn't like that the new baby was getting tons of attention. From the time they were little kids, Wallie and Oliver did not get along.
Oliver's childhood seemed to be pretty normal. His parents loved him and spent plenty of time with him when they could. They were always doing fun things as a family. They went to the aquarium and hung out around town. They experienced the history of Charleston together and they all loved it. With people always coming in and out, there were always new people to meet and lots to learn. Manny often traveled for his job, and he brought things back to his sons and wife. By the time Julia got pregnant again two years later, Manny was spending most of his time away from home. Wallie was in school and Oliver spent most of his time in day care while his mom was at work and his dad was taking trips around the state. Around the time the new baby, Joey, was born, Manny had managed to get a more settled job reporting on events around the city instead of around the state. Oliver was able to spend some time at home while Julia was out on maternity leave taking care of Joey. Soon, Oli had entered school two grades below his brother. Oli liked school. He was smart and learned quickly. Not to mention he was better at it than his brother was, which was something that he could be very proud of. This increased the tension between the two brothers. Wallie was jealous of his brother's skills. Instead of dwelling on it, he quickly advanced his skills in something he knew he was better at than Oliver. Wallie was the most athletic kid you had ever seen. By the time he was eight, he was playing basketball, soccer, baseball, and football, and he was good at all of them. He especially loved basketball and football. Oli was not athletically inclined. Although he tried a few things, he didn't particularly excel at any of them. His brother was a sports star, and Manny was proud of him. So was Julia, but she was focused on taking care of the new baby. Oli already felt the attention fading away from him. There was only so much attention you could get from excelling in school. There were Wallie's games to go to and a baby needed a lot of attention. The family still went on trips and had fun together, but regular day-by-day life just made Oli feel like he was getting lost in the background. Wallie still wasn't particularly happy about having another baby to take attention away from him, so for the most part he didn't get along with Joey, either. Still, Joey was too young to care and it eventually it wore off. However, Oliver and Wallie never seemed to get along. When they were young they got sent to the counselor's office a few time to try and work out the problems, but nothing seemed to work. Instead of fighting all the time, Oli and Wallie just started to ignore each other and avoid each other as much as possible.
As they grew older, Oliver began to get used to the idea of being the middle child. His older brother got tons of attention because of his sports, and he became very popular around school. Oliver kept to himself a bit more, but as he got a little older and began getting less and less attention around his home, he began seeking more attention at school. He started to be more of a class clown and pick fights with people. He tried to be interesting, he tried to make people want to be around him, and it worked relatively quickly. Soon he had tons of friends he liked hanging out with. He liked his family well enough, for the most part, but as his dad started working his way up the career ladder even more, he had to work more. He worked from home some days, but that didn't help much. Manny was becoming more secluded from his family. As much as Julia tried to bring them together again, go out on the town with the family, Manny had to work or was too tired or stressed to do much with his family. The only thing they all did was go to Wallie's games, which they did on a regular basis since Wallie was always on a sports team. The biggest thing they did together was take a two week vacation to Maine during the summer. It was both anticipated and dreaded by the family, because it meant two full weeks of spending time with each other. It was the only time that Wallie and Oliver ever really got along with each other, because they had very few choices. Joey and Oliver got along decently well most of the time, and even though Joey got a lot of attention being the baby of the family, he and Wallie got along pretty well, too. He was a smart kid, and he had taken up music. It seemed that the Hayes family had managed to cover all the bases when it came to talents and skills. Oli got the short end of the stick when it came to the attention for his skill, though. Joey had concerts, Wallie had games, and Oli had tests. By the time Oli had made it to middle school, he started acting out, hoping to get attention. He knew his parents were proud of him for being smart, but he wished that he could get the attention his brothers got. He got some attention for acting out, but mostly bad, and it seemed to just seclude him from the family even more.
A couple of years later, everything changed. Manny came down with an illness. He didn't know what he had, and even though he went to the doctor multiple times, it took almost two months for him to get his diagnosis. He had cancer, and it had to be treated. Everything changed. Even though Manny tried to keep up with work, it was hard to do work and take time off for treatment. Eventually Manny had to quit his job. It was hard for him, and for the entire family. The grandparents had to chip in and help with Manny's cancer treatment. About a year later, the cancer went into remission. Manny was able to get his job back and things were back to normal, but it couldn't last. Only two years later, when Oli was fourteen and just about to start the big and scary world of high school, Manny's cancer was back. It was a horrifying time for the family. The cancer was more aggressive. Manny had to quit his job all over again. He wasn't responding to treatment. There was only one thing the family could do. There was a cancer treatment center on the coast of Florida. That was when the family moved to Miami, just a few miles from the cancer treatment center. He got worse, then better, than worse again. During this time things in the Hayes household were crazy. The family had always been pretty well off, but all of the sudden they barely seemed to have any money. It was almost all going toward Manny's cancer. He managed to get a job selling products over the phone, which he only had to do two hours three days a week. High school was a really hard time for Oli. Now he had even less attention from his family, and even though Wallie and Joey were getting less attention, too, it was hardest on Oli. He felt invisible at home. He looked for attention elsewhere. As much as he loved his family, he was still a sixteen year old boy, and he needed to be loved. So he started acting out again, but it seemed like no one noticed anymore, so he gave up on that. He tried failing school, the one thing he had going for him, but it still seemed like no one noticed, so he didn't do that, either. Then he moved on from acting out in school to getting into some more trouble outside of school. He began going to parties, drinking, hooking up with girls, and most of all he began picking fights. His dad's condition was quickly deteriorating, and as soon as Wallie graduated, he got a job. He had gotten a football scholarship, but he refused to leave when his father was so ill. Oli offered to get a job, but his family refused to have him distracted while he was in school. As much as they tried to convince Wallie that college was for him, he wouldn't go. Around the middle of Oli's junior year, his father went to the hospital full time. They gave him a year to live. He wasn't responding to treatment, as hard as they tried. Things have been even harder for the past few months, and as much as Oli's tried to deal with it, things have just gotten worse for him.
More than anything, Oli wants to get out of town. He wants his dad to get better, but he's given up for the most part on that. He's been hoping for his father to get better for years, and when his cancer came back it was like a kick in the face to the entire family. Oliver is hoping to get into college, which is why he is trying to keep his grades up decently. He knows he won't be able to go anywhere decent, but even just community college would be enough for him at this point. He has no idea what to do with his life, since he doesn't know himself very well, but he is hoping to figure it out. He wants to have everything in his life planned out and neat, but he realizes now that life isn't like that. He hates the idea of things being as bad for him in his future as they are now. Oliver wants something exciting to happen, something good. He's tired of being hated by his family. He wants attention and love, but he doesn't think he's worth it or even capable of being loved anymore. As much as he has hoped things would work out for him, he's starting to think that his life is just one big curse.
