Oliver couldn’t help but smirk as he replied with the first word that came to his mind. “Vegetarians.”
He himself loved burgers. He liked meat, which may have been hinted at by the chicken tenders sitting on the plate in front of him. Oliver had never really been the type that understood why someone wouldn’t want to eat meat. It was their choice and everything. He wasn’t questioning that. He just didn’t understand. Meat was delicious. It was also pretty much the only source of protein he could really think of, and there were plenty of animals to go around. Plus, he wasn’t killing them. Just think of all of the animals that would be roaming around the earth if they didn’t regulate how many pigs or chickens would be running around, taking over neighborhoods in their farm animal glory. Oliver still wasn’t really sure why everyone thought that he and Kenzie were so much alike, but living with her did give him a little bit of insight as to things they had in common. He knew that the house she lived in was her parents, but he also knew that she lived in her own area. He hadn’t even seen her parents. Which reminded him that he had been there for days and he hadn’t gotten a call from anyone asking for his whereabouts yet. They must have been too distracted from his father and brother. At least living with Kenzie was fun. He still thought he should probably go home for a little bit, just to make sure things were okay. As much as he wanted to get out of his house, he still felt bad when he left. “I’d prefer you alive,” Oliver agreed, ready to start tearing up his plate of food if she had the nerve to throw another piece of lettuce at him. “But a guy’s got to do what he’s got to do to defend himself.” He watched her hands carefully, taking quick glances back up at her eyes to see if he could detect mischief in them. He wasn’t even eating anymore, just waiting, making sure it was safe to do.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Mackenzie’s nose crinkled at his answer, she should have known better than to walk into that one. She respected vegetarians, she did, it just drove her nuts when vegetarians tried to convert you. If she wanted to become a vegetarian she would, but she had no interest in the matter. She loved steak, there was no way around it, and she didn’t plan on giving up red meat any time soon. Mackenzie poked around at her salad again and looked up as the waitress waltzed by their table to look at how they were doing. The least the woman could have done was be smoother instead of her conspicuous and awkward walk by.
When Oliver said the word defend she automatically thought about her defenses. Mackenzie had always been guarded; she didn’t like having people so close that they could hurt her. Although it allowed her feelings to stay safe, it wasn’t beneficial to others. But the more she thought about being so guarded she realized something. She didn’t know Oliver as well as she thought. They talked, obviously, but it was always about something irrelevant. He had lived in her house for days now, which was tons of fun, but it was almost like living with a stranger. Mack knew Olive through his reputation, and she guessed that he knew her the same way. On one hand, Mackenzie trusted Oliver about as far as she could throw him, and on the other she was completely intrigued. She figured that people said they were one in the same because they partied, did what they wanted, had countless hook-ups, and were fun to be around, but thinking about it she wondered if there was something more.
She watched as a cute little family came in smiling and laughing. She instantly felt the urge to roll her eyes but she didn’t. “So, what’d your family say when you randomly packed your bags to move out for a week?” she asked almost absent-mindedly.

Oliver really was not a fan of talking about his family. Actually, he avoided it at all costs. Most of the time, people honestly didn’t care enough to ask, so he was in the clear. He had figured that Kenzie would call him out on it eventually. Though he didn’t really peg Kenzie as the family type, considering her situation at home, he had known she would ask. He had been living with her for days and there was no sign of her parents anywhere. He saw the door that lead to the rest of the massive Burton household, and had even tried to open it while Kenzie was out on one of her runs, and found that she kept it locked. He wondered what happened on the other side, but was not rude enough to unlock the door and find out for himself. He wanted to stay at her house.
He watched as Kenzie looked at the family coming in, and he got the feeling that she thought it was about as adorable as he did. He wasn’t even sure he believed in happy families anymore. Evidence just tended to point to the contrary. There was his family situation, Kenzie’s, Kona’s, hell, even the nice ones had family problems. Every time he saw a family together, laughing and smiling, he couldn’t help but think it was simply an act put on for the rest of the world.
He shrugged, but tore apart his chicken tender a little too aggressively. He didn’t want to lie to her, but he didn’t want to talk about it either. “Not much.”
That was almost true. They hadn’t actually said anything. He looked up as the door opened and the hostess spoke again, and a little smirk came across his face. He leaned over and nodded toward the door. “Look who it is,” he chuckled. One of their classmates had entered with a woman old enough to be his color, but a completely different ethnicity. And they were alone. Angelo Cartman, that sly dog.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Mack figured that Oliver wasn’t going to say anything more about his family and she didn’t want to press the issue just yet. Honestly, she was surprised he hadn’t asked anything about her family. It was a question she had gotten used to when people came over and finally realized that her parents weren’t about to pop up anytime soon. Mackenzie figured that eventually in life the topic would surface again and he’d answer her fully. Normally, she would’ve instigated and would have tried to dig a little deeper, but something told her not to. Especially with the way he had ripped that piece of chicken. Her eyebrow arched as she looked at him skeptically, “What’d the chicken ever do to you baby?” she teased.
Mackenzie looked over to the door and saw Angelo. Her face turned to disgust upon his arrival. Angelo was known as a super perv, and all of the rumors about him were true. Mackenzie kept her distance from Angelo on purpose. He wasn’t the kind of person she got along with and she was content with their first name basis. “Well wouldn’t you know…” she said acknowledging his arrival and smirked a little. Apparently, Monday nights were popular for dates.
It was nearly impossible not to see one of your classmates somewhere in Miami. Almost 90% of the senior class went to the same parties, did drugs together, and each group of friends hung out in the same places. If you were desperate to find someone, it was easy enough to do so. Each person had something that made them recognizable; it was like everyone had their own calling card. She wasn’t entirely sure what her calling card would be, or was, but she figured she probably had one just like the rest of her peers. There was no doubt in Mackenzie’s mind that there were places to hide in Miami, but you couldn’t run for very long.
As she poked around with her salad once again her attention was taken by the waitress that had come back over. She asked politely if they needed anything else and Mackenzie shook her head, “No thanks, I’m fine” she said looking over at Oliver.
